Keauhou Sea Cave Kayak Tour

What to expect

Paddle south beneath lava cliffs toward the End of the World, with breaks to rest and talk story about the coastline along the way. Your guide helps each kayak into the Dragon’s Throat sea cave when conditions allow, then it’s back toward the bay for a snorkel over the reef and fresh-cut pineapple to finish.

Where you’ll paddle

You launch from Keauhou Bay, traditionally known as the birthplace of King Kamehameha III, and paddle south along the lava cliffs toward Kuamoʻo Bay and the cliffs locals call the End of the World. Along the way you cross coral gardens and underwater lava tubes, and your guide helps each kayak into a sea cave when the ocean allows.

Keep watch for dolphins, sea turtles (honu) and the occasional manta ray. At the snorkel stop, picked each day for the calmest water, look for parrotfish, yellow tang, butterflyfish, wrasse and, if you’re lucky, an octopus.

Your guide adjusts the route to the ocean conditions that morning, keeps the group together and helps first-time paddlers feel comfortable from launch to landing.

How the morning goes

1. 8:45

   Meet at Keauhou Bay

   Find the trailer full of kayaks at the boat ramp, by the white SeaQuest building.

2. 9:00

   Safety talk and launch

   Paddling basics, ocean safety, then we launch one kayak at a time.

3. 9:20

   Paddle the coast

   South along the lava cliffs toward Kuamoʻo Bay, over coral gardens, with breaks to rest and talk story about the coastline.

4. 10:00

   The Dragon’s Throat

   Your guide helps each kayak into the sea cave, as far as the ocean allows that day.

5. 11:00

   Snorkel the reef

   Kayaks get tied together, gear comes out, and everyone gets in the water.

6. 11:30

   Pineapple and farewells

   Fresh-cut pineapple, snacks and cold drinks, on the water or back on shore.
